5 Tips to Find Your Passion
REPOST
When someone talks about something they are really passionate about, its like you see another side of them. They light up and talk with conviction and it makes you want to listen. I think that everyone has a passion, but unfortunately many people don’t discover theirs, or they cast it to the side, or they settle for something else and then don’t find any time to devote to it. But when you have something that you really, really care about, something that you wake up every morning thinking about, it can change your life.
1. WHAT ARE YOU A COMPLETE DORK ABOUT?
If there is something that you want to know anything and everything about, that you could spend hours devoted to it and not get bored, you’ve found your passion. For example, I am extremely passionate about music. I play four different instruments, sing, I am studying music theory, and I like to compose. I recently found a series of videos on the internet that went very in depth about the origins of music and theory and how it evolved and was discovered, as well as the different systems of music all over the world and how they all connect. To a lot of people, this would be the most boring thing ever, but I got really excited and watched the whole series in one hit, unintentionally staying up until three in the morning. But I loved every minute of it. If you can find something that you just can’t learn enough about or spend enough time doing, you’ve found a passion of yours.
2. EXPLORE DIFFERENT THINGS
The best way to find something your passionate about, especially if you have no idea what it might be, is to explore. Passions don’t have to be hobbies or specific activities, it could be a cause that you care very deeply about, or it could be a sport, a job, doing service work, an academic subject, pretty much anything. But chances are something you are passionate about will not just fall into your lap without you doing anything, you have to go look for it and try different things to see what you are interested in.
3. WHAT DO YOU MISS DOING WHEN YOU ARE BUSY?
Ask yourself, if you had all the time in the world, what would you spend it doing? A lot of people would probably say ‘sleeping’, or ‘eating’, especially if they have very busy, crazy lives. But when faced with the actual situation, sleeping and eating would bore you very quickly. If you had to fill you days with only one thing, what would that be?
4. ASK PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU WELL
It can be kind of hard to tell what you are really passionate about, even more so if you have other things you have to be doing and you don’t have time for a “hobby” or extra activity. But just like how you can see the difference when someone talks about something they are passionate about, other people see that in you. Ask someone who has known you for a while what you seem to really care about.
5. FIND A WAY TO DEVOT SOME TIME TO IT, OR MAKE IT YOUR JOB
If you’ve figured out what your passionate about, don’t waste it! There is no point trying to trick yourself into thinking your are interested in something you aren’t, so focus on doing what makes you happy. If that means setting aside twenty minutes each day to go on a run or learn about ancient Japanese architecture, it’s worth it.
A lot of people in the world settle for things, rather than putting in the extra effort it takes to find what actually makes them happy. Don’t be one of those people, life is so much better when you have things to live for.
